Default Printer Keeps Switching to Adobe PDF on Windows 10
I take a unmarried user on a Windows x PC and mostly a user of Dynamics Great Plains 2015 that keeps calling me into her office because she can't Send TO Email from Great Plains 2015. It will simply sit there...
Each time I go check, there is either NO default printer selected or ADOBE PDF is set as default. I can't stop this from happening.
Any suggestions?
I plant the fix and honestly, I am surprised it was this easy...in Windows 10, it is set to manage default printer for you under settings. I turned it off and bam, it works...

Offset question is what does she practise every forenoon or the evening before that no ane else is doing?
Is there some kind of update process or cleaning process (CClean or the similar) that she is doing that is not normal?
Accept yous gone to her office when she gets there and checked the organisation settings to make certain they are correct? Then once she calls y'all enquire what she has done.
Is there some program installed on her system that is out of the norm for the company?

Oh homo, I fought this problem for MONTHS. This is going to save you a lot of time. It has to do with the print spooler crashing. I finally found it cached in the logs. Then what happens is, your print spooler crashes because at that place are installed drivers (print drivers) that are old/conflicting/etc. So the spooler crashes and takes your printer availability list with information technology. If you disable the print spooler, you lot'll find the merely things left are press options similar OneNote/XPS/PDF/etc. So If you had building1-printer5 as your default printer, and now it simply dropped off, where does the default go? To one of those builtin ones that don't leave, like OneNote/XPS/PDF. Impress spooler recovers and the service restarts (this could exist in milliseconds mind you), only the default printer is all the same PDF, why? Because it already switched. It's non going to switch back. I fixed this with a reimage to save time. Just you could get into C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\x64 and delete the folder labeled as three. That folder is where your print drivers are. You'll also desire to delete the printers out of printmanagement.msc (open upwardly the local print server, your workstation) > printers, and any drivers left over in printmanagement.msc > Drivers. You'll probably go an error they are in use. You'll have to stop the impress service and within about a second of restarting it, select the driver and do a delete. Information technology's hokey but it works. Or yous can reimage and telephone call information technology a day instead of doing all that actress work that may withal give you problems. The reimage stock-still 100% of the PCs because of the driver conflicts that ended up crashing the print spooler service.

Oh human being, I fought this problem for MONTHS. This is going to save y'all a lot of fourth dimension. It has to practise with the print spooler crashing. I finally institute it buried in the logs. So what happens is, your impress spooler crashes because there are installed drivers (print drivers) that are old/conflicting/etc. So the spooler crashes and takes your printer availability list with it. If you disable the print spooler, y'all'll find the only things left are printing options similar OneNote/XPS/PDF/etc. And then If you had building1-printer5 as your default printer, and at present it but dropped off, where does the default go? To one of those builtin ones that don't leave, like OneNote/XPS/PDF. Print spooler recovers and the service restarts (this could exist in milliseconds mind you), but the default printer is still PDF, why? Considering it already switched. Information technology'south not going to switch dorsum. I fixed this with a reimage to salvage time. But you could go into C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\x64 and delete the folder labeled every bit iii. That folder is where your print drivers are. You'll also want to delete the printers out of printmanagement.msc (open up the local print server, your workstation) > printers, and any drivers left over in printmanagement.msc > Drivers. You'll probably get an error they are in utilize. You'll accept to terminate the print service and inside about a 2nd of restarting it, select the driver and practice a delete. It's hokey simply it works. Or y'all can reimage and call it a 24-hour interval instead of doing all that extra work that may still give you bug. The reimage stock-still 100% of the PCs because of the driver conflicts that concluded upwardly crashing the print spooler service.
Reimaging is not the easiest option right now, no, but volition consider it if I have to and volition try your other suggestions for certain and report back progress.

You'll also want to delete the printers out of printmanagement.msc (open up the local print server, your workstation) > printers, and any drivers left over in printmanagement.msc > Drivers. You'll probably go an error they are in apply. You'll have to end the print service and inside about a second of restarting it, select the driver and do a delete. It'due south hokey but it works. When I mentioned the less than a 2d for stopping the print service, that wasn't an exaggeration. It'due south for deleting the printers/drivers if they show as in use. I snapped the windows side past side, stopped the service, left-clicked once on the driver in question, then hitting Delete > Enter. You'll find it doesn't get away, yous accept to select Refresh at the top or striking F5 to run across it dropped from the list. Not the best way, only it works. Took a while to notice you have to do information technology in a split second to get it to forcefully remove.

You lot know what yous should endeavor earlier going through all that crap? Just do a sysprep. I just thought about that. It removes the driver cache. Here's supporting material showing what is removed with sysprep.
http://superuser.com/questions/68697/what-is-sysprep-how-is-it-useful
If you haven't ran it before, y'all tin do it iii times earlier you get a fatal error. Yous can find it in C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\sysprep.exe
If you do use up all of your iii preps, you lot need this article (roll down to poster "Riffing" for the 3 things you need to practise) to get sysprep to go along after 3 times used.
SysPrep Rearm - User: Riffing
It covers this, basically:
In Regedit,
Setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Setup\Condition\SysprepStatus changed to 7
Setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\SkipRearm to 1
Renaming (or deleting) C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\Panther
Make sure to practice all three each time you attempt a sysprep.

If you need a specific commuter to be removed from the commuter store, you lot can use:
pnputil -d oemX.inf where X is the number of the commuter you want to delete
pnputil -eastward to show all drivers

Nosotros accept Windows x deployed on about 50 computers at our school board, we've disable the "Allow windows manage my default printer" and we've added the Reg Fundamental to utilise legacy manner and it however changes for all of our users.
Text
REG Add together "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" /v "LegacyDefaultPrinterMode" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f
This is probably our biggest effect with Windows 10, but the we do experience the occasional "Your default browser was reset", resetting our default browser to Border, instead of Chrome.
Any further insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting to the point of applying a fix I actually don't want to do.. Setup a scheduled task to reset the printer back every infinitesimal or so.. :/
Text
wmic printer where name='\\server\\printer_name' call setdefaultprinter

I'm going to add to this:
At that place is an fault in Win10 that can reset the "Let Windows Manage My Default Printer" to being turned on. If this keeps happening to y'all, alter the registry thusly:
Text
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows] "LegacyDefaultPrinterMode"=dword:00000001
you may demand to likewise exercise these:
Text
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows] "LegacyDefaultPrinterMode"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-xx\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows] "LegacyDefaultPrinterMode"=dword:00000001
Hope this helps anyone that stumbles on this thread!
